Phuket: The Beginning of the End

For the long weekend at the end of July, the crew decided to convene at Jenny’s house in mountains of Phuket. From the moment we arrived at this beautiful resort, we were welcomed by all the creature comforts of home that we had been craving. Melty grilled cheeses (made by yours truly), comfy couches with blankets and throw pillows, lounging by the pool on big fluffy towels, hot steamy showers with real water pressure, even a meal of delivery pizza! Just general relaxation and bonding. It was perfect.

We threw a real American BBQ that put the Kalasin luncheon to shame. Complete with real beef patties, a vodka watermelon, and some moderately successful grilled french fries. After this we headed downtown to Patong—a beach known for dirty girly bars and good imposter shopping. Seeing as it was only 1pm, and we weren’t in the mood for prostitution, we headed over to purchase some DVDs and tacky souvenirs instead. We returned to the dirty patong that night for some notably-thai karaoke bar hopping and found ourselves in one of the strangest bars in Thailand so far.

To be honest the majority of the weekend was a blur of good food and good people. It didn’t seem to matter to anyone what we were doing. Whether we were making a seriously epic breakfast, playing Bananagrams or the Chicken Mask Game, or being simultaneously seasick and hung over on a boat ride to the most beautiful scuba diving site, we were just happy to be together again.

However, as much as we tried to talk about anything else, conversations kept returning to the topic of “home.” Who is ready, who isn’t, what we’re excited for, what we’ll miss, when we’re coming back… it kinda felt like the beginning of the end. But it a good way, for me at least. I think I’m ready for it. I am so happy I stayed on for a second semester, but now I think it’s time to go home. To move on to the next chapter, whatever that may be.

See you soon!
